Alibaba Cloud, the cloud unit of Alibaba Group, tested its (artificial intelligence) AI-enhanced multi-camera replay system in partnership with Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) at the Olympic Qualifier Series in Shanghai in May.
This system by Alibaba Cloud is set to be the foundation of broadcasting during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, offering spectators a different kind of viewing experience.
The cloud-based system leverages machine learning and deep neural networks to provide dynamic, multi-angle views of events. It captures footage from strategically positioned cameras and transforms it into high-quality 3D models using Alibaba Cloud’s advanced computing infrastructure. This technology allows for smooth and realistic action replays, giving audiences an immersive perspective on the competition.
“As a pioneer in delivering intelligent sports solutions, we aim to work with OBS to redefine how global sports enthusiasts experience and engage with the Olympic Games,” said Selina Yuan, president of International Business at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.
The AI system’s first significant deployment was at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, where it provided immersive coverage for curling and speed skating. For Paris 2024, it will be used at 12 venues, including beach volleyball, tennis, judo, and rugby, and will be integrated into OBS’ production system to offer enhanced replay footage for Media Rights Holders globally.
As the official cloud service provider for the International Olympic Committee, Alibaba Cloud continues to lead in broadcasting innovation. By pushing the boundaries of how sports are experienced, it aims to deliver more inclusive and dynamic coverage of the Games, paving the way for the future of sports broadcasting.
