The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has released an update to its mobile banking app that adds new security features to protect users from unauthorized access and other digital threats.
Version 13.1 of the app, which became available on iOS, Android, and Huawei devices at the end of July, includes tools that detect suspicious background activity, block app interference, and help guard against device-based risks.
“These enhancements are part of our ongoing efforts to deliver secure and seamless digital banking services,” said Fitzgerald Chee, head of Consumer Platforms at BPI. “Security is foundational to the trust our clients place in us.”
The new system may notify users of possible security issues, such as alerts that a device’s security has been compromised. In some cases, access to the app may be restricted until the issues are addressed.
BPI advised Android users to take specific steps if they experience problems using the app. These include disabling full-screen overlays, which are often used by antivirus apps. To do this, users can go to Settings > Apps, choose the antivirus app, and turn off the related permissions.
For Samsung users, BPI recommends using the Secure Folder feature. To enable this:
- Go to Settings > Biometrics and Security > Secure Folder, sign in with a Samsung account, and set a lock type.
- Add the BPI app to the Secure Folder by tapping the + icon and selecting the app.
- Launch the BPI app from the Secure Folder after closing all other apps.
The bank encouraged clients to update to the latest version of the app and follow the recommended steps to avoid service interruptions.
