Climate tech startup WasteX expands reach with fresh funding

WasteX's carbonizer

WasteX, a climate tech startup operating in the Philippines and Indonesia, is poised for significant growth with its latest advancements in biochar technology and $450,000 in funding from P4G Partnerships, an initiative that helps businesses working on climate mitigation and adaptation solutions in food, water, and energy.

Central to WasteX’s biochar technology is its proprietary small-scale and semi-automated carbonizer, which utilizes both biomass fuel and captured syngas for heat generation, thereby enhancing energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact.

“The P4G Partnership not only provides substantial capital for an early stage climate-tech startup but requires and greatly supports the partnership to engage with national policy-making and market development,” said Pawel Kuznicki, founder and CEO at WasteX. “The objective is to facilitate the development of a favorable regulatory and commercial environment that would support the growth and adoption of the innovation.”

Leveraging the P4G Partnership funding, WasteX plans to establish biochar production facilities in strategic locations throughout Indonesia in collaboration with local mills and poultry farms. This initiative aims to provide free biochar to local farmers along with training programs to promote its effective integration into agricultural practices.

Pawel Kuznicki, Founder and CEO at WasteX, expressed gratitude for the partnership with Bina Tani and the grant funding from P4G, highlighting the collaborative efforts to create a favorable regulatory and commercial environment for the adoption of biochar technology.

Regional growth

The widespread adoption of biochar technology comes at a crucial time, amid soaring fertilizer prices and diminishing agricultural yields. WasteX’s integrated biochar solution, which includes proprietary equipment, mobile app support, and carbon credit facilitation, simplifies the adoption process for agricultural producers and farmers.

Recent trials of WasteX’s biochar technology in diverse crops across the Philippines and Indonesia have demonstrated impressive results, with significant increases in yield and reductions in fertilizer usage. WasteX’s expansion efforts extend beyond the Philippines, with the establishment of a larger-scale biochar facility in Indonesia, signaling the company’s commitment to regional growth and impact.

“P4G is committed to supporting innovative climate solutions like WasteX that deliver not only long-term positive impact to smallholder farmers but also do so in a way that contributes to Indonesia’s priorities around enhancing food security and reducing emissions,” said Robyn McGuckin, executive director at P4G.
