A recent report by market intelligence firm International Data Corp. (IDC) forecasts that by 2028, 80% of chief information officers (CIOs) will implement organizational changes to leverage artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and analytics, fostering agile, insight-driven digital businesses.
This prediction by the IDC underscores the role of CIOs in shaping the future trajectory of their companies by prioritizing data-driven strategies and embracing emerging technologies.
“As operational leaders increasingly influence technology decisions and digital business strategies become more complex, CIOs are tasked with driving innovation and adaptation within their organizations,” IDC noted.

By 2026, the majority of CIOs are expected to embed cybersecurity measures directly into systems to proactively address vulnerabilities and prevent cyberthreats and by 2025, they will prioritize strategic data management to cultivate a data-centric culture for competitive advantage in the digital era.
Beyond AI
However, two-thirds of CIOs may struggle to meet their digital revenue goals by 2025 due to misaligned investments. Nearly half of CIOs are anticipated to automate regulatory compliance and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives by 2025 to mitigate legal risks and bolster their brand.
By 2026, a considerable portion of CIOs will collaborate closely with chief marketing officers (CMOs) to unify strategies and enhance trust-driven customer engagements by breaking down silos of customer data.
“CIO’s role is to embed technologies like AI into the very DNA of business as a strategic ally in addressing business challenges and opportunities, while ensuring their data is secure and regulatory requirements and ESG goals are met,” said Franco Chiam, VP, Cloud, Datacenter, Telecommunications, and Infrastructure Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. “It’s this fusion of vision and vigilance that will define the successful CIOs of Asia/Pacific and beyond.”
Beyond AI, the report advocates for a holistic approach to technology integration, encompassing cybersecurity, data management, resilient leadership, ESG compliance, and customer engagement. It emphasizes the need for CIOs to architect comprehensive technology strategies that seamlessly align with business objectives to remain competitive and resilient.
