News of Kim Jong-un’s death in April led many Filipinos to search for any information that could confirm this and made him the most-searched male personality in Google Philippines. Kim is North Korea’s Supreme Leader since 2011.

Google Philippines announced the local lists — trends, news, personalities, shows, events, and how-tos — that topped Filipinos’ search queries in 2020. The results gave people a glimpse of how people in this part of the world have been coping with the pandemic.

Kim beat US President-elect Joe Biden who came in second. “Crash Landing on You’s” phenomenal popularity made lead star Hyun Bin the third most-searched male personality. He is also the most-searched Korean celebrity.

“When America sneezes the world catches a cold.” The Filipinos’ interest in the US elections held in November was undeniable as it became the overall most-searched query for 2020. The announcement of the winner took a few weeks because of the mail-in ballots. Biden’s victory took the world by storm and social media was abuzz for a few hours after media outlets called in the elections in his favor.

Filipinos’ love for Hallyu (Korean wave) deepened during the lockdown as they continued to search and enjoy content from their favorite K-pop personalities. K-dramas “Crash Landing on You,” “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay,” “Start-Up,” “Itaewon Class,” “The World of the Married,” and “The King: Eternal Monarch” dominated the TV shows category. Academy Award-winning Korean film “Parasite” along with “Train to Busan 2” also took up spots in the top movies list.

Korean celebrities who starred in this year’s top series dominated the personality categories. This included fan favorites such as Hyun Bin, Kim Soo-hyun, Park Ji-hoon, Jun Ji-hyun, Kim Go-eun, and Seo Ye-ji, among others.

The pivot to online learning also yielded top searches in academic-related searches, which led Google to introduce Education as a new category.
