Covestro, a materials manufacturer based in Germany, has partnered with Alibaba Cloud, the cloud unit of Alibaba Group, to provide solutions for the measurement and traceability of sustainable materials across value chains. This partnership focuses on enhancing supply chain transparency through advanced carbon accounting and tracking tools.
The collaboration leverages Covestro’s expertise in sustainable plastic solutions and Alibaba Cloud’s advanced digital technologies. Covestro’s sustainable materials will be complemented with comprehensive carbon footprint data, while Alibaba Cloud’s Energy Expert platform will facilitate end-to-end lifecycle emission accounting. The platform uses cutting-edge technologies like blockchain to ensure precise tracking of recycled materials from production to final consumer products.

Achieving sustainability targets
Wang highlighted that these joint solutions not only support customers in enhancing supply chain transparency but also build trust among environmentally conscious consumers.

The partnership’s practical applications are already evident in the consumer goods sector. Covestro, in collaboration with China’s leading beverage maker Nongfu Spring, has pioneered the recycling of 19-litre water barrels into post-consumer recycled polycarbonate. This material was then utilized by Kaco, a niche stationary brand, to manufacture gel pens. Through the capabilities of Alibaba Cloud’s Energy Expert, consumers can now scan a QR code on the pen’s packaging to trace the material’s origin and view detailed carbon footprint data at each stage of the production process.
This initiative underscores the potential of technology to foster a more sustainable future and demonstrates how cross-industry collaboration can lead to significant advancements in supply chain transparency and sustainability.
