Many companies may have set their environmental targets, but they still struggle to meet them due to a lack of technical knowledge and proper tools, according to a new report by Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group.
The findings come from Alibaba Cloud’s “Tech-Driven Sustainability Trends and Index 2024,” which surveyed 1,300 business leaders from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The report shows that while 80% of organizations have green goals, only about one-third have committed to science-based net-zero targets.
Alibaba Cloud said most organizations understand the value of technology in driving sustainability.
“For companies navigating climate and digital transformation simultaneously, the message is clear: success depends on choosing the right partners, tools, and strategies to deliver measurable progress,” Alibaba Cloud said in the report. “With the right foundation, AI and cloud can power a greener, smarter, and more resilient future.”
The report points out that 76% of the surveyed organizations believe that AI and cloud computing are important for achieving sustainability. However, 82% also think that these technologies need to be developed sustainably.
Alibaba Cloud has developed solutions like Energy Expert, a platform that uses AI to track emissions and energy use in real time. The tool has already helped more than 3,000 organizations worldwide.
Five ways to align tech with green goals
The report outlines five steps that businesses can take to match their digital upgrades with environmental goals.
First, companies are urged to link their use of AI and cloud tools with clear sustainability indicators, like improving energy use or tracking emissions across supply chains. Second, they should work with tech providers who are open about their energy use and run on renewable power.
Third, the report stresses the need to include security in sustainability plans, as cybersecurity concerns remain a barrier. Fourth, it encourages using open and trustworthy AI to save costs, boost energy efficiency, and tailor solutions to local needs. Finally, the report highlights the need for stronger ties between businesses and governments, with 82% of business leaders calling for more government support in policies, incentives, and education.
The report concludes that sustainability can be a business advantage and a driver of growth.
