Chipmaker AMD and AI firm OpenAI will deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs to support OpenAI’s next-generation artificial intelligence infrastructure. The first phase, involving 1 gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
Under the agreement, OpenAI will designate AMD as a core strategic compute partner to power large-scale AI systems, starting with the MI450 series and future GPU generations. The collaboration builds on earlier joint efforts involving the MI300X and MI350X series, expanding their partnership to include both hardware and software development.
To strengthen their strategic alignment, AMD issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, which will vest in stages as certain deployment, performance, and share-price milestones are met. The first tranche will vest once the 1-gigawatt deployment begins, with additional tranches tied to scaling up to 6 gigawatts.
“We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at massive scale,” said Dr. Lisa Su, chair and CEO of AMD. “This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem.”
“This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI. “AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster.”
AMD said the agreement could generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue and is expected to contribute positively to the company’s earnings.
