Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, a compact device that opens into a larger screen for videos, games, reading, and work.
The launch puts Apple in more direct competition with Samsung, Google, Huawei, Honor, and other companies already selling foldable phones. It also gives Apple a new premium product category beyond its regular iPhone lineup.
When closed, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display designed for one-handed use. Apple said the screen offers 90% of the viewing area of the iPhone 18 Pro while remaining small enough to fit easily in a pocket.
Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, which is 50% larger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The extra space can be used for watching content, playing games, and working with multiple apps.
Both screens have the same shape, allowing apps and content to resize without suddenly changing their layout when users open or close the phone. They also support ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness.
Apple added a nano-texture finish to the inner screen to reduce glare, reflections, and the visibility of the fold in the middle. A FaceTime camera is hidden under the inner display when it is not being used.
Apple Pencil support will arrive later this year. Users will be able to take notes, draw, or mark up documents on either screen using the Apple Pencil with USB-C.
The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip. It uses a custom vapor chamber to control heat and a dual-battery design that Apple said can deliver all-day battery life.
Its folding design also gives users additional ways to position the phone when taking photos or recording videos. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI are built into iOS 27, which has been adjusted for the phone’s two-screen design.
The body is made from Grade 5 titanium, while the hinge contains more than 100 parts. Ceramic Shield protects the back, and Ceramic Shield 2 covers the front. Apple said the front offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
The iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance. It will come in star white and night sky. Preorders begin Oct. 16, while sales start Oct. 23. The Apple iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States for the base 256GB storage.
