Credit and information bureau CIBI Information Inc. is urging employers in the Philippines to strengthen their hiring verification processes as the job market continues to expand. The reminder comes as more companies express optimism about recruitment, raising concerns about the rise of fraudulent job applications.

According to online job platform Jobstreet’s “Hiring, Compensation, and Benefits Report 2025,” about 44% of hiring managers and HR professionals expect higher job market activity in the second half of 2025 compared to 2024. This optimism suggests stronger demand across industries and a growing need to fill new positions.

However, as hiring accelerates, CIBI said that many organizations risk overlooking proper screening procedures. This could make it easier for falsified credentials or fabricated experience to go undetected. A study by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) estimates that organizations lose around 5% of their annual revenue to fraud, with hiring-related fraud contributing to these losses.

“While the job market in the Philippines continues to thrive, so does the risk of encountering fraudulent applications. Falsifying credentials is a deception that directly affects a business,” said Ivy Ramirez, VP for Service and Industrials of CIBI Information Inc. “Beyond immediate financial losses, fraudulent activity can undermine productivity, erode workplace trust, and damage a company’s reputation.”

Ramirez emphasized that proactive verification is an essential step to protect both businesses and the integrity of the workforce.

Instances of falsified applications are becoming more common as technology makes it easier to manipulate documents and create fake credentials. Economic pressures and competition among job seekers have also encouraged some to exaggerate their qualifications. Common fraudulent practices include inflating work experience, fabricating educational achievements, or using false identities.

These actions, even when minor, can have major consequences for employers. Hiring unqualified candidates leads to productivity issues, higher training costs, compliance risks, and potential damage to brand credibility if errors or misconduct occur.

CIBI said traditional background checks and interviews are no longer enough to verify candidate authenticity, especially as companies scale their hiring efforts. More advanced verification systems are now needed to confirm identities, employment history, and credentials before hiring decisions are finalized.

Beyond protecting businesses, robust verification also benefits honest applicants. Fair recruitment practices ensure that qualified candidates are not overlooked because of fraudulent competitors.

“By embedding proactive verification into hiring, businesses protect themselves, their people, and ultimately the strength of the country’s labor market. Integrity in hiring is more than just a business process; it’s a public service,” said Pia Arellano, president and CEO of CIBI Information Inc.
