The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has alerted the public about a fake video circulating on social media that falsely shows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. endorsing an online trading platform.

According to the CICC, the video was posted by a Facebook page recently renamed “Inquirer PH Insider.” Investigators found that the page, previously called “Deborah Webb,” is being managed from abroad and links to an unrelated online shopping website.

A technical review by the agency confirmed the use of deepfake technology to manipulate the video and make it appear as though the President is promoting the product.

“This form of digital deception preys on public trust by blending the likeness of a national leader with familiar media branding, in an attempt to drive engagement with what may be a fraudulent scheme disguised as a financial opportunity,” the CICC said in a media advisory.

The CICC has asked social media companies to remove the video and other related content using similar misleading tactics. The agency also reminded the public to be cautious of online ads, especially those that feature public figures or make exaggerated claims.

The warning comes ahead of President Marcos’ State of the Nation Address (SONA), as the government expressed concern over potential disinformation efforts during this period.

At a press briefing, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the President has directed the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to continue studying artificial intelligence, including its uses, risks, and global best practices.

“The President has ordered continuous research on AI: its advantages and disadvantages, how it can be used in the country, best practices in other countries, and regular policy recommendations,” Castro said.

She also called on media professionals to help stop the spread of false information.

“We need your help. If you see fake news on social or mainstream media, please help alert the public,” she said.
