The Department of Science and Technology–Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) and De La Salle Araneta University (DLSAU) have partnered to promote science and technology literacy among students.

The collaboration will integrate DLSAU into two DOST-STII programs: Science Journo Ako and the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosks (STARBOOKS).

“This collaboration will not only provide our institution with greater access to S&T resources, but it will also open up new platforms for our faculty and students to share their work,” said Dr. Jennifer Reyes, vice chancellor for academic and research at DLSAU. “Our student publication, in particular, will benefit from having more resources and models to learn from.”

The memorandum of understanding indicates joint efforts in content development, student and teacher activities, and capacity-building programs through quiz bees, publications, and workshops. The goal is to make science, technology, and innovation more accessible to students, educators, and the university community.

Science Journo Ako is designed to help develop science communicators and journalists across the country to share up-to-date scientific knowledge with various sectors. STARBOOKS, meanwhile, is an offline digital “library-in-a-box” that provides communities with limited internet access a reliable source of science and technology information.

“This opportunity to now be a part of the DLSAU family is a significant milestone for our institution, as well as a great honor for the DOST to walk with you, side by side, in our shared journey to make science, technology, and innovation more relevant today, and harnessing the power of science communication so that scientific knowledge is easily understood, readily accessible to our stakeholders, and greatly appreciated by the Filipino people,” said Rodolfo de Guzman, chief science research specialist of the DOST-STII Communication Resources and Production Division.

DOST-STII, one of the department’s 18 attached agencies, serves as the national S&T databank, library, and training arm for science communication.

As part of the ceremonial launch, DOST-STII handed over copies of its publications, the Philippine Journal of Science and S&T Post, to the DLSAU Learning Resource Center to mark the beginning of the partnership.
