The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will start issuing personalized white beep cards for students in September to make it easier for them to get their 50% fare discount on the MRT-3 and LRT-2 train stations.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the new cards aim to save time for both students and rail staff by removing the need to line up and fill out forms at stations.

“This is to give students a faster and more convenient way to pay for their fare,” Dizon said. “This will be available in September.”

The cards will display the student’s name, will be valid for one year, and can be renewed each school year. Students can get their personalized beep card by visiting any MRT-3 or LRT-2 station starting next month and presenting a valid school ID for on-the-spot printing.

White beep cards with automatic 50% discounts are already available for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Dizon also said that starting September, the processing time for beep cards will be shortened, allowing students to get their cards faster than the current five to seven days.

In July, the DOTR ordered MRT-3 and LRT-2 to place dedicated student lanes in every station to make travel smoother for those availing of the discount. The measure follows a June 20 directive that raised student fare discounts on the three major rail lines from 20% to 50%, which will remain in effect until 2028.
