Firstlight, a Filipino edtech company, said it has shortened the time needed to produce its educational videos after adopting Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) generative AI tool Amazon Nova Reel.

“The scalability and agility of AWS services have made content creation seamless, helping us meet surging demand with speed and confidence,” said Chrissie Bellosillo, chief operating officer of Firstlight, during a media briefing at AWS Cloud Day Philippines. “With AWS, we have significantly improved our content production and reduced timeframes from months to just weeks.”

Firstlight serves more than 30,000 learners in the Philippines and works with more than 1,500 schools and institutions in 80 countries.

With Amazon Nova Reel, the company creates interactive learning content such as structured lessons, short films, and graphics for subjects like history, economics, and current events in less time compared to its previous workflow.

The company said AWS’ GenAI services helped reduce the production of full-length documentaries from two years to three months. It can also now produce explainer videos, curricula, and training kits in days rather than weeks.

Bellosillo said adopting AI-powered tools required the introduction of new skills within the team. The faster turnaround also allows the company to develop more projects and collaborate with additional partners.

Firstlight also works with schools and other organizations to ensure compliance with copyright, intellectual property rights, and regulatory requirements.

“The EdTech sector across Southeast Asia is rapidly adopting cloud technology to make quality education accessible and engaging,” said Gunish Chawla, managing director, Commercial Sector, ASEAN, AWS.

Before Amazon Nova Reel, Firstlight relied on stock video libraries, which often lacked specific visuals, forcing the team to spend more time and money on physical shoots or traditional animation. These steps slowed down content delivery and limited scalability. By shifting to AWS, Firstlight said it simplified production while keeping costs manageable.

Amazon Nova Reel, built on Amazon Bedrock, can generate videos and animations from text prompts or existing materials. For example, a 60-second explainer video can be produced using prompts to illustrate global events such as volcanic eruptions or storms.

Firstlight also enables schools to customize lessons, monitor classroom performance, and track student progress with dashboards powered by AWS. These dashboards help teachers identify students who need support and address learning gaps.
