Google’s Year in Search 2024 reveals the trending topics and events that captured the attention of Filipinos. From climate issues to pop culture and sports, the data shows the topics Pinoys turned to Google for information.

The top overall search was “heat wave,” which showed the public concern about extreme weather and its connection to climate change, which ranked sixth. The Paris Olympics came in third overall, spotlighting the pride surrounding Carlos Yulo’s gold medal win. The Filipino gymnast appeared on four lists: overall trends, news, sports, and male personalities.

Entertainment remained a major focus, with searches dominated by well-known names and pop culture hits. Actress Jaclyn Jose’s passing made her the second-most-searched term, while Liam Payne of One Direction ranked eighth. BINI, the Nation’s Girl Group, led searches for female personalities, with member Mikha Lim also in the top 10. The group’s hits, “Salamin, Salamin” and “Pantropiko,” trended in music searches, alongside Dionela’s viral R&B track, “Sining.”

Streaming platforms also left a mark. The Korean drama “Queen of Tears,” a Netflix sensation, led searches for series and Korean titles. The show’s popularity aligns with a reported 12% growth in online streaming.

Filipinos’ curiosity about artificial intelligence (AI) also emerged, with three related terms in the top ten, reflecting the country’s growing tech-savvy culture.

Google’s data shows how events, innovations, and cultural moments influenced what Filipinos wanted to know more about, showcasing a blend of awareness, pride, and curiosity.
