Successful entrepreneurship often comes with a learning curve, especially when it comes to finances. Entrepreneurs Jim Bacarro of Linya-linya and sisters Roma and Maan Agsalud of Common Room recently shared their experiences with financial missteps and the valuable lessons learned in RCBC Boz Sessions, a series spotlighting Filipino business leaders.

Bacarro, recounting Linya-linya’s journey, described the initial years as a “rollercoaster of hilarious financial missteps.” From cash flow issues to undercapitalization, the journey was marked by trial and error. Bacarro emphasized the significance of these mistakes, saying that they were instrumental in shaping the company’s strategies today.

“Those epic fails were also the foundational parts of who we are as a company today,” Bacarro shared.

Personal and business finances

The Agsalud sisters admitted to fundamental errors in their early business endeavors, including a lack of separation between personal and business finances. Their journey underscores the importance of basic business knowledge and the perils of emotional decision-making.
“Sales meant celebration, right? Wrong! We pulled out cash without thinking twice. And guess what? When it was time to pay suppliers, our wallets were singing crickets,” they said.

Both sets of entrepreneurs offered advice gleaned from their experiences. Bacarro stressed the importance of recognizing mistakes promptly and leveraging them for growth, while the Agsalud sisters advocated for self-study and data-driven decision-making.

The entrepreneurs’ stories reflect the entrepreneurial journey’s highs and lows, emphasizing the transformative power of learning from mistakes. Through RCBC Boz Sessions and platforms like RCBC Boz, aspiring entrepreneurs gain access to invaluable insights and tools to navigate the complexities of business ownership.

As Bacarro said, “Entrepreneurship is fun, but having the right support, like RCBC Boz, can turn challenges into triumphs.”
