Telecommunications company Globe has recorded a significant increase in its efforts to block online content related to child pornography and illegal gambling in the first half of 2024. The company intercepted 1,718 domains and 190,167 URLs associated with child pornography, compared to 1,295 domains and 129,652 URLs during the same period in 2023.

Globe also ramped up its crackdown on illegal gambling sites, deactivating 2,726 domains in the first six months of 2024. This is an increase from the 1,828 domains deactivated in the first half of the previous year.

“Globe is focused on creating a safer online environment for all, especially for children,” said Anton Bonifacio, CISO and chief ai officer at Globe. “Our increased efforts to restrict access to harmful content reflect our dedication to upholding the highest standards of online safety.”

Since launching its #MakeITSafePH campaign in 2017, Globe has aligned its initiatives with the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 (Republic Act 9775). This act mandates internet service providers to deploy technologies that prevent access to or transmission of child pornography.

Pressing issue

To enhance its capabilities, Globe has invested over $2.7 million in advanced content filtering systems. The company collaborates with various organizations, including the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators, and non-government organizations to strengthen online child protection.

Globe’s measures are critical in addressing the concerning trend highlighted by a study from the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The study identified the Philippines as a leading source of Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) content.

In addition to blocking harmful content, Globe’s #MakeITSafePH campaign involves comprehensive educational programs and awareness activities. These initiatives are designed to empower users with the knowledge and tools needed to protect themselves online.
