In a recent report titled “Generative AI Readiness: Are Telcos Geared Up for the Generative AI Revolution?”, IDC highlights a growing trend among Communication Service Providers (CSPs) in the Asia Pacific (Apac) region toward embracing generative AI (GenAI) solutions.
The IDC report analyzed the strategic considerations CSPs must evaluate before integrating GenAI into their operations and outlined a roadmap to help these providers navigate the transformation journey.
“CSPs are methodically exploring feasible business use cases by leveraging GenAI, conducting trials, and allocating funds toward GenAI solutions,” said Swathi Arunaa, senior research analyst, Telecom and Internet of Things, IDC Asia Pacific. “However, prior to embracing GenAI, it is crucial to assess their readiness for its adoption.”
According to the IDC, as CSPs aim to modernize and enhance their services, there is a noticeable shift in focus toward investments in artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). Historically, the industry has leveraged predictive and interpretive AI technologies. For instance, AIOps has been employed to automate network operations, and AI-driven chatbots have enhanced customer service.
However, there is an increasing interest in GenAI across the sector. Unlike its predecessors, GenAI can generate content and discern patterns from its training data, offering transformative potential. Over 50% of CSPs are expected to allocate part of their IT budgets to GenAI initiatives in 2024. This funding will primarily come from reallocated budgets previously assigned to digital transformation (DX) or other AI-related projects.
The IDC report outlines a framework for CSPs to assess their readiness for GenAI adoption, drawing from the IDC AI Council and the January 2024 Future Enterprise Resiliency & Spending Survey.
Key considerations for GenAI deployment
Several critical factors emerge from the IDC report for CSPs considering GenAI integration:
• Strategic Partnerships: Successful deployment of GenAI solutions relies heavily on the expertise of strategic partners within the ecosystem. These partnerships are crucial for unlocking the full potential of GenAI.
• Workload Management: Effective data management, cost considerations, and multi-cloud interoperability are vital for deploying GenAI workloads across various infrastructure options, whether on-premises or public.
• Adoption Challenges: CSPs must navigate privacy and security concerns specific to the telecom sector. Developing telco-specific GenAI models is essential for overcoming these challenges.
• Platform Capabilities: GenAI’s advanced conversational abilities and its capacity to bolster automation make it an attractive proposition for enhancing AI platform adoption, which in turn can optimize internal operations.
• Continuous Improvement: As GenAI models evolve, they will play a pivotal role in transforming operations support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS), ultimately optimizing internal processes and enriching services offered to end-users.
As these providers continue to experiment and refine their approach to GenAI, they are poised to unlock new efficiencies and elevate their service offerings, setting a new standard in the telecommunications industry.
