Data from the International Data Corp.  (IDC) indicate a 7.8% year-over-year increase in smartphone shipments reaching a total of 289.4 million units. This marks the third consecutive quarter of growth, signaling a steady recovery for the smartphone industry despite lingering macroeconomic challenges in various markets.

Samsung reclaimed its position as the leading smartphone provider in Q1, surpassing Apple which had held the top spot at the end of 2023. While Apple’s share decreased from the previous year, Samsung managed to secure 20.8% of the market share, down from 22.5% in the previous year. Apple followed with a 17.3% market share, down from 20.7% in the previous year.

“As expected, smartphone recovery continues to move forward with market optimism slowly building among the top brands,” said Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.

Xiaomi saw its market share rise to 14.1% from 11.4% in the previous year, while Transsion’s share increased to 9.9% from 5.7%. However, both Apple and Samsung saw declines in market share compared to the previous year.

“We continue to see growth in value and average selling prices (ASPs) as consumers opt for more expensive devices knowing they will hold onto their devices longer,” said Nabila Popal, research director with IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team.

Popal noted that there has been a shift in power among the top companies, with Xiaomi and Transsion gaining ground while the top two players experienced negative growth in Q1.

Despite the positive momentum, challenges remain for smaller brands seeking to establish their position in the market. As the recovery progresses, larger companies are expected to further consolidate their dominance, leaving smaller players to strategize for survival in a competitive landscape.

Overall, the Q1 2024 report from IDC indicates a promising trajectory for the smartphone industry, with recovery efforts gaining momentum and significant shifts in market dynamics reshaping the competitive landscape.
