Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala (JAZA) has stepped down as chair of telecommunications company Globe Telecom Inc., closing a leadership run that helped shape one of the country’s largest digital and connectivity providers.
The transition, confirmed during Globe’s organizational meeting after its annual stockholders’ meeting as per the company’s disclosure, places Cezar “Bong” Consing as the new chair. JAZA remains chair of AsiaCom Philippines, Inc., a joint venture of Ayala Corp. and Singtel.
JAZA’s tenure at Globe spanned decades, during which the company expanded from a traditional telecom operator into a major digital platform player. Under his leadership, Globe scaled mobile and broadband services, pushed digital payments adoption, and backed platforms that now serve millions of Filipinos. The company’s growth tracked the Philippines’ growing demand for mobile data, streaming, and online services.
“We welcome with pride the appointment of Bong Consing as chairman of Globe Telecom,” said Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, chair of Ayala Corp. “Bong has long been a valued leader within the Ayala Group and has demonstrated clarity of judgment, discipline in execution, and a deep commitment to strengthening the institutions he serves. With his leadership, we are confident Globe will continue to build on its strong foundations and play an even greater role in enabling opportunity, progress, and inclusion in the years ahead.”
Consing, a veteran banker with more than 30 years of experience, previously led Bank of the Philippine Islands as president and CEO from 2013 to 2021 and held senior roles at J.P. Morgan.
He received an A.B. Economics degree (Accelerated Program), magna cum laude, from De La Salle University in 1979. He obtained an M.A. in Applied Economics from the University of Michigan in 1980.
Consing, 64, is president and CEO of Ayala Corp., a role he has held since September 27, 2022, and has served as a director since December 2020. He has been part of the Ayala Group Management Committee since 2013.
He is vice chairman of several publicly listed Ayala Group firms, including Ayala Land, Inc., Globe Telecom Inc., Bank of the Philippine Islands, and ACEN Corporation.
Consing also chairs AC Logistics Holdings Corp., AC Infrastructure Holdings Corp., AC Industrial Technology Holdings, Inc., AC Ventures Holding Corp., and AC Mobility Holdings Incorporated. He is vice chair of AC Energy and Infrastructure Corporation and Ayala Healthcare Holdings, Inc., and serves as director of Asiacom Philippines, Inc. and ACEN International Inc.
The leadership shift marks a passing of the baton from one of the Ayala Group’s most influential figures to a finance-driven executive, as Globe continues to compete in a fast-growing digital economy shaped by data demand, fintech, and enterprise connectivity.
