Young Filipinos are increasingly choosing to save through digital banking, with Gen Z and millennial customers accounting for more than 87% of all Metrobank eSavings accounts opened since the start of 2026, according to Metrobank.
The figures highlight how smartphones are becoming the primary way many Filipinos manage their money. Beyond paying bills and transferring funds, younger customers are now using mobile banking to build savings and access other financial products.
Metrobank said the shift shows changing banking habits, as more customers prefer opening and managing their savings accounts through the Metrobank App instead of visiting a branch. The app also allows users to transfer funds, pay bills, and manage their daily finances from their mobile devices.
The bank’s data shows that nearly half of its eSavings users are from Metro Manila and Region IV, areas with large populations of young professionals. It also found that most account holders are women, indicating strong adoption among digitally connected, working-age Filipinos.
The trend comes as more young adults begin their careers, support their families, and prepare for long-term financial goals. For many, opening a savings account is the first step toward building an emergency fund or preparing for major expenses.
Recognizing these changing needs, Metrobank continues to expand the services available through its digital banking platforms. Aside from opening an eSavings account online, customers can also place money in an Online Time Deposit to potentially earn higher returns while managing their accounts digitally.
Customers interested in investing can also access UITF Online through the Metrobank Online site, allowing them to explore professionally managed investment funds based on their financial goals and risk appetite.
By offering savings and investment products through its digital channels, Metrobank aims to help customers manage their finances throughout different stages of life, from building their first savings to growing their wealth over time.
To encourage more Filipinos to save, Metrobank is running its eSavings Promo until Sept. 30, 2026. New customers who open a Metrobank eSavings account through the Metrobank App and successfully register for the promotion will receive a P100 Lazada Gift Card, subject to the promo’s terms and conditions.
The growing adoption of digital savings accounts illustrates a shift in Philippine banking, where mobile apps are becoming the preferred channel for everyday financial transactions. As digital banking services continue to expand, banks are competing not only on convenience but also on how well they help customers develop long-term financial habits.
