The Honor Pad X8a may be marketed toward students, but it also holds strong appeal for avid book readers and casual users alike. Its size, display features, and processing power make it a good choice that goes beyond classroom needs.

If you’re in search of a tablet that can handle schoolwork, entertainment, or long reading sessions, the Honor Pad X8a might be worth considering.

At first glance, the Honor Pad X8a strikes with its slim metal design. It feels sturdy yet lightweight, which is a great balance if you plan to carry it around often. (I have to note, though, that the tablet I’m currently using is a bit — just teeny weeny bit — lighter than this one.)

Its 11-inch screen makes it compact enough to be portable but large enough to provide a decent viewing experience, whether you’re watching videos or reading an e-book.

The tablet’s 84% screen-to-body ratio helps make it look sleek, and its overall appearance doesn’t scream budget device despite its affordable price (P6,999). This makes it a strong contender for students who need something durable yet stylish.

Display and eye comfort

Honor Pad X8a is designed with an 11-inch FHD display. The 1920 x 1200 resolution ensures images (great for manga) and text (for the Kindle app) look crisp, which is a plus whether you’re reading, watching videos, or editing documents. The 90Hz refresh rate also gives smooth visuals when scrolling or gaming, reducing any noticeable lag. This combination of features provides a pleasant user experience in various activities.

One of the key features that I like is the added multi-fold eye protection technology. This reduces blue light and flicker, helping to ease eye strain during extended screen time. For students or book lovers, this is a useful feature, especially for late-night reading or studying sessions. The 400 nits of brightness are sufficient for most indoor environments, although it may struggle slightly under direct sunlight.

Performance

The Honor Pad X8a runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset paired with an Adreno 610 GPU. For an affordable tablet, these specifications are good enough for everyday tasks, whether that’s browsing the web, watching videos, or even doing some light gaming. It might not be the ideal choice for those expecting high-end gaming or graphics-heavy apps, but for most users, it should get the job done without much issue.

One of the more practical features for students and professionals who do client presentations is the Smart Screen Split. It allows you to multitask efficiently, supporting up to four apps on the screen at the same time. This makes it easy to take notes while watching lectures or have multiple documents open for comparison. For students managing multiple tasks, it adds flexibility to how they can approach their work.

The Honor Pad X8a operates on MagicOS 8.0, which is based on Android 14. It’s simple and intuitive, making navigation easier for those familiar with Android devices.

Sound and multimedia

The audio quality on the Honor Pad X8a also deserves mention. I managed my expectations on this but what a pleasant surprise. Honor has equipped it with a quad-speaker system powered by the Honor Histen algorithm, which enhances the sound quality. Whether you’re listening to music, watching movies, or participating in an online class, the sound is rich and clear. While you can’t expect the same audio fidelity as a high-end tablet, the speakers provide more than enough volume and clarity for general use. Just enough for me.

For students using the device for educational videos or e-learning platforms, the sound system is more than capable. And for casual users who enjoy watching movies or listening to podcasts, the sound will be sufficient to enhance your experience.

Battery

A significant plus for the Honor Pad X8a is its 8,300mAh battery. Honor claims that this can give users up to 14 hours of video playback on a full charge. In real-world usage, you can expect it to easily last through a full day of use, whether you’re taking online classes, reading, or casually browsing.

The long battery life makes the device a great companion for students who may need to use it throughout the day without constantly worrying about recharging. It also suits those who like to read or watch content for long hours, making the tablet flexible for various types of users.

The Honor Pad X8a is clearly aimed at students, but its features make it appealing to a broader audience. Readers, like me, will appreciate the crisp, bright display, as well as the eye protection technology, while students will enjoy its multitasking abilities. The decent processing power and quad-speaker system make it suitable for general multimedia use, and the long battery life is a definite plus for anyone looking for a device that can last throughout the day.

Ultimately, the Honor Pad X8a offers a well-rounded package at a competitive price. It balances performance, display quality, and features that cater to both work and leisure. If you need a tablet for school, reading, or general use, it’s a device worth considering.
