SailPoint introduces new tool to track ‘Shadow AI’ use in real time

SailPoint Inc., a unified identity security company, introduced SailPoint Shadow AI Remediation, a new feature designed to help enterprises detect and control the use of unauthorized artificial intelligence (AI) tools across their organizations.

More employees now use platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini without going through approved IT systems. This growing trend, often called “Shadow AI,” creates security risks and limits visibility for IT teams on how company data is being used.

SailPoint said its new feature promises to give security teams real-time visibility into employee activity on AI tools, including how often they are used and whether files are being uploaded. The company cited its own research showing that 80% of organizations reported AI agents performing unintended actions, such as accessing or sharing sensitive data.

“Many vendors are trying to solve the Shadow AI problem with isolated browser or endpoint tools, but that misses the bigger picture. This is fundamentally an identity challenge,” said Chandra Gnanasambadam, EVP of Product and CTO at SailPoint.

The tool allows organizations to block unauthorized uploads, redirect employees to approved AI platforms, or require justification before access is granted. This centralized approach aims to reduce data exposure risks and improve compliance as AI adoption accelerates in the workplace.

SailPoint said the solution can be deployed through a browser extension using device management tools such as Intune or JAMF, without requiring changes to network infrastructure. The company added that this approach minimizes disruption for end users while enabling security controls.

“We believe controlling AI usage is best achieved through a platform-centric approach that unifies identity, data, and security intelligence in real time,” Gnanasambadam said. “By linking human and non-human identities, we provide the context needed to not just see Shadow AI, but to govern it effectively.”
