Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has stopped a fake website used in a scam to steal customers’ personal information. The scam involved sending messages asking customers to click a link to claim fake “Smart points” rewards.
“Scammers use fake cell sites to send messages that look real. Smart does not include links in official messages to customers,” said Atty. Roy Ibay, vice president and head of Regulatory Affairs at Smart.
The fake website tricked people into sharing personal information. Smart confirmed that no such promo exists and reminded customers that its official website is https://smart.com.ph.
The company also warned about another scam targeting users on messaging apps. Scammers send fake links that lead to bogus login pages to steal account details. Smart urged users to verify suspicious links before clicking.
To fight scams, Smart has strengthened its network to block harmful messages. In 2024, it stopped over 2.3 billion scam messages and blocked more than one million suspicious mobile numbers.
Smart is also running its #CyberSmart campaign to teach customers how to avoid scams. Tips include:
- Do not reply to unknown messages.
- Block or delete messages with suspicious links.
- Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true.
Customers can report scams through Smart’s HuliScam portal, verified social media pages, or hotline *888. Reports should include details like the sender’s number and the message content. Smart blocks fraudulent numbers once verified.
“Protecting our customers is very important. We encourage everyone to stay alert and report suspicious messages,” Ibay said.
