Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) has secured GSMA certification for its SIM Swap and Device Swap application programming interfaces (APIs), giving businesses more tools to detect online fraud beyond one-time passwords (OTPs).
The two APIs power SmartSafe NetIdentity, a digital identity protection solution under the SmartSafe suite of PLDT Enterprise. Banks, fintech companies, e-commerce platforms, gaming providers, and other businesses can use it to identify suspicious changes linked to customer accounts.
The SIM Swap API checks whether a mobile number has recently moved to a new SIM. The Device Swap API detects whether a SIM card has been transferred to another phone or device. These changes may indicate an account takeover or unauthorized activity. Businesses can use the information to require additional verification or review a transaction before allowing it to proceed.

The system uses signals from Smart’s network, allowing companies to add security checks without requiring customers to complete more steps during every login, payment, or transaction.

Smart is the first Philippine telecommunications company with a GSMA Open Gateway-certified Number Verification API with Silent Authentication. It has also received GSMA certification for its RoamStatus API.
The latest certification expands Smart’s use of standardized network APIs for enterprise security. It also allows companies, including small businesses, to use mobile network information as another layer in their fraud detection systems.

As more payments and customer services move online, stronger identity checks could help businesses reduce fraud while avoiding delays that may discourage legitimate users.
