In the horror genre, the ability to communicate with the dead often serves as a chilling premise. “Talk to Me,” the latest offering from A24, explores this concept with a fresh perspective and has become the studio’s highest-grossing horror film to date. It is now streaming on Lionsgate Play.

Directed by Australian twins Danny and Michael Philippou, “Talk to Me” immerses audiences in the eerie experiences of a group of friends in suburban Adelaide. They discover an embalmed hand that allows them to summon spirits, turning what begins as an adrenaline-fueled game into a harrowing descent into the supernatural.

“It’s important to both of us that our big horror moments are grounded in character and really affect the story,” said co-director Danny Philippou during an interview with RogertEbert.com. “We didn’t want to have shocking imagery for the sake of having it.”

At the heart of the story is Mia, portrayed by Sophie Wilde, a teenager navigating the complexities of her mother’s recent suicide. Wilde’s performance has garnered critical acclaim, earning her the Critics’ Choice Award among other accolades. Mia’s character embodies vulnerability and recklessness, making her a compelling figure as she grapples with her grief and the disturbing events that unfold.

“It felt like a drama to me in a lot of ways,” Sophie Wilde told GamesRadar.com. “Grief is such a multifaceted experience, and it’s really exciting as an actor to explore that complexity.”

“Talk to Me” not only delivers on scares but also delves deep into the emotional and psychological landscapes of its characters.
