In a bid to safeguard the integrity of the 2024 elections across more than 40 nations, major tech firms gathered at the Munich Security Conference to announce their joint effort against deceptive AI (artificial intelligence) manipulation.

The “Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections” outlines a series of measures aimed at thwarting the spread of AI-generated content designed to mislead voters.

“Elections are the beating heart of democracies. The ‘Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections’ is a crucial step in advancing election integrity, increasing societal resilience, and creating trustworthy tech practices,” said Ambassador Christopher Heusgen, chair of the Munich Security Conference. “MSC is proud to offer a platform for technology companies to take steps toward reigning in threats emanating from AI while employing it for democratic good at the same time.”

The accord, endorsed by prominent companies such as Adobe, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and others, comprises a range of commitments. These include the development of technology to identify and counter misleading AI-generated content, fostering cross-industry collaboration, ensuring transparency in addressing such content, and supporting public awareness initiatives.

Potential risks

The companies agreed to develop and deploy technology to mitigate risks associated with deceptive AI election content. They will also assess the AI models to be used within the scope of the accord to understand their potential risks.

The accord will also enable companies to detect and appropriately address the distribution of deceptive AI content on their platforms.

It will promote resilience across industries against deceptive AI election content and orovide transparent information to the public regarding their actions. With this, they hope to maintain engagement with diverse global civil society organizations and academics and support efforts to enhance public awareness, media literacy, and societal resilience.

“We’re committed to protecting the integrity of elections by enforcing policies that prevent abuse and improving transparency around AI-generated content,” said Anna Makanju, VP of Global Affairs at OpenAI. “We look forward to working with industry partners, civil society leaders and governments around the world to help safeguard elections from deceptive AI use.”
