Short from video platform TikTok has partnered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Philippines to help Filipinos recognize and avoid investment scams as part of the platform’s #ThinkTwice digital literacy campaign.
A recent Global Anti-Scam Alliance survey found that more than 75% of Filipino adults encountered at least one scam in the past year. Scams often rise during the holiday season, prompting the initiative to encourage users to pause, reflect, and #ThinkTwice before responding to suspicious online offers.
“While the fight against scams is a multi-sectoral one, we’re confident our partnership with the SEC is an important step in empowering Filipinos to navigate the digital world safely,” said Yves Gonzalez, head of Public Policy for the Philippines at TikTok.
TikTok and the SEC will produce a series of #ThinkTwice videos to educate users on common financial and investment scams, show how to verify sources, and provide tips to avoid fraud. The first video will focus on Ponzi schemes, explaining how they operate, the language scammers use, and ways to protect oneself. The videos will be accessible on TikTok, the #ThinkTwice Resource Hub, and the SEC’s official social media accounts.
This partnership aims to give Filipinos practical knowledge to navigate online offers safely and avoid falling victim to scams.
“The SEC is continuously finding ways to reach more people and spread our message of financial literacy to ensure that every Filipino has the knowledge and tools to make smart and informed investment decisions,” said SEC Commissioner Rogelio Quevedo.
He noted that the partnership will enable them to spread the message to more Filipinos and provide clear and practical guidance on how they can protect their hard-earned money, especially during the holiday season.
