Visa, a global payments technology company, has joined forces with Thames International and the City Government of Baguio to promote digitalization and support tourism. The five-year partnership, launched with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, aims to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with digital tools and insights.

The initiative, part of Visa Government Solutions’ global programs, will help MSMEs adopt digital payment systems, access innovation support, and gain marketing insights through Visa Destination Insights. This platform offers data on spending and visitor trends to strengthen the city’s tourism sector.

“Tourism is a vital part of the Philippine economy,” said Jeffrey Navarro, country manager for Visa Philippines. “We are thrilled to partner with Thames International and Baguio to enhance the visitor experience, promote cultural heritage, and empower MSMEs to drive growth for local businesses.”

Thames International will provide education assistance for the summer capital and major tourist destination’s small business owners.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong welcomes this partnership as it is aligned with the LGU’s smart city and digitalization efforts.

As a Unesco Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, Baguio plays a crucial role in the Philippines’ cultural and economic landscape. MSMEs, which account for 90% of the city’s 22,121 registered businesses, are central to this vision, particularly in wholesale, retail, and tourism-related sectors.

The program includes workshops on digital trends, connections to technology providers, and a data-first tourism strategy. It will also foster collaboration between local stakeholders and global Visa experts, creating opportunities to share best practices and enhance financial inclusion.

“This partnership strengthens Baguio’s creative economy while equipping small businesses with tools to thrive in a digital age,” Navarro said.

Through these efforts, Visa, Thames International, and Baguio aim to boost the city’s appeal to tourists, ensuring its cultural and economic growth continues sustainably.
