As the holiday season approaches, a survey by global digital payments processor Visa shows that Filipinos are changing the way they travel, shop, and pay.

According to the Green Shoots Radar survey, many Filipinos are shifting to contactless payments while focusing on experience-driven travel. Popular destinations for the holidays include Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan.

“We’re seeing more Filipino travelers opting for seamless and secure digital payments, which enhances their travel experience,” Jeff Navarro, country manager of Visa Philippines, said in a statement.

The survey found that 66% of Filipino travelers prefer using contactless payment options like mobile wallets and tap-to-pay cards. This shift shows the growing confidence in digital transactions for booking accommodations, dining, and shopping. However, despite the rise in cashless payments, 71% of travelers still carry cash as a backup for places where digital payments may not be widely accepted.

“While digital payment options provide convenience, carrying cash remains essential in some areas where cashless infrastructure is limited,” Navarro said.

When it comes to travel destinations, 38% of Filipino respondents visited Singapore in the past year, making it the top holiday spot. The country’s mix of urban attractions and rich cultural experiences, combined with its proximity to the Philippines, has made it a preferred choice. Hong Kong followed closely with 31%, offering shopping and festive celebrations, while Japan attracted 30% of Filipino tourists with its scenic landscapes and cultural heritage.

Aside from international travel, the Philippines itself has become a more attractive destination. From January to August 2024, the country saw a 10% rise in international visitors, with over 3.66 million tourists arriving. This growing interest has contributed to the nation’s tourism economy, supported by efforts to improve digital payment systems.
