Smart Communications Inc., the wireless unit of PLDT Inc., reported a rise in mobile data users and 5G data traffic in the first quarter of 2025, driven by higher 5G phone use and ongoing improvements to its nationwide network.
By the end of March, Smart had 40.9 million active mobile data users, which the company said puts it ahead of its closest competitor. During the same period, 5G data traffic grew by more than 80% year on year, while 5G device use rose by about 60% from the previous quarter. Smart attributed this growth to more affordable 5G phones, stronger data offers, and continued network expansion.
Focus on 5G and stable data revenues
“The shift to 5G is improving how our network runs, making it more efficient, supporting LTE and especially 5G users, and strengthening everyday mobile experiences,” said Anastacio Martirez, COO of Smart. “This momentum puts us in a better position to steady our revenues and to keep growing the individual segment.”
In the first quarter of 2025, PLDT’s Individual Wireless segment earned ₱21.3 billion, with mobile data revenues holding steady at ₱18.8 billion. Mobile data now accounts for 88% of the segment’s revenue.
“We’re focused on growing data traffic year after year and staying ahead of the competition,” Martirez said. “The company does not see the same softening trend as the rest of the industry, with data traffic continuing to grow, supported by strong 5G networks.”
Testing new 5G tech for crowded events
Smart also tested a newer version of 5G called 5G Standalone (5G SA) at j-hope’s “Hope on the Stage” concert at the Mall of Asia Arena. The setup helped fans post, stream, and connect smoothly during the packed event. This 5G SA technology allows Smart to carve out dedicated lanes in the network for specific uses, such as boosting signals during high-traffic occasions.
Smart also enabled concertgoers to use 5G Max, giving subscribers better access for sharing their experience in real time.
PLDT said it continues to invest in building out its integrated network to improve customer experience. Smart’s mobile service covers 97% of the population and forms part of PLDT’s fiber-connected infrastructure across the country.
