Semiconductor company AMD debuts its RDNA 4 architecture with the introduction of Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 graphics cards. The new graphics cards, part of the Radeon RX 9000 series, come with 16GB of GDDR6 memory and improvements in gaming performance, artificial intelligence (AI) processing, and raytracing technology.

The RX 9000 series introduces third-generation raytracing technology, enhancing lighting, shadows, and reflections for a more realistic gaming experience. AI accelerators in the cards also offer improved processing power, supporting generative AI applications and creative workloads.

The Radeon RX 9070 series is designed for high-resolution gaming, offering better performance compared to AMD’s previous generation. According to AMD, the RX 9070 provides over 20% more performance than the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p resolution, while the RX 9070 XT achieves more than a 40% performance increase.

Among the key features of the Radeon RX 9000 series is its updated compute unit design. AMD says the new RDNA 4 compute units provide up to 40% higher gaming performance than the RDNA 3 architecture. The cards also feature third-generation raytracing accelerators, which reportedly double the raytracing throughput per compute unit.

AI accelerator

AI acceleration has been improved with second-generation AI accelerators, allowing faster processing of AI models. AMD claims these changes result in up to eight times the throughput for certain AI calculations compared to the previous generation.

For better image quality, AMD is introducing FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), an AI-driven upscaling technology aimed at boosting game performance while maintaining visual clarity. At launch, more than 30 games will support FSR 4, with additional titles to follow later in the year.

The RX 9000 series also includes AMD HYPR-RX, a collection of software features designed to improve gaming performance, responsiveness, and efficiency. These features, which can be adjusted through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, include Radeon Super Resolution, Fluid Motion Frames, Anti-Lag, and Radeon Boost.

To support next-generation displays, AMD has integrated the Radiance Display Engine into the RX 9000 series. The technology enables support for DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b, allowing resolutions up to 8K at 144Hz and improved color accuracy. The cards are also compatible with AMD FreeSync, reducing screen tearing and stuttering in games.
