As ransomware attacks continue to target businesses in the Philippines and around the world, the focus on data protection has become more urgent than ever. Companies are losing millions of dollars due to data breaches and operational downtime.

In response to these challenges, businesses are turning to integrated backup appliances that combine hardware and software in a single solution. This approach aims to make data protection easier and more reliable, especially for organizations operating across different platforms and systems.

Quick data recovery

A key feature of modern backup solutions is the ability to recover data quickly and completely. Global deduplication technology, which reduces backup time and bandwidth usage, helps businesses meet their Recovery Point Objective (RPO) — the maximum tolerable period during which data might be lost. To further safeguard data, companies can use a mix of on-site and off-site backups, along with WORM (Write Once, Read Many) and immutable storage to prevent unauthorized changes.

“Verifying recovery capabilities is equally important,” according to Synology. “Businesses can create a sandbox environment within the device to test disaster recovery strategies without impacting the production environment.”

Security plays a major role in keeping backups safe from ransomware. Features such as role-based access control, IP-based access restrictions, and offline backups ensure that only authorized users can access data, and backups remain untouched until needed. The 3-2-1 strategy — three copies, on two types of media, with one stored offsite — is being enhanced with offline copies to guarantee clean recoveries.

Layered defense strategy

For large organizations with many locations, centralized backup management tools offer a practical advantage. Some appliances, like Synology’s ActiveProtect, can monitor thousands of servers and workloads from a single dashboard. This visibility allows IT teams to detect issues faster, perform remote recovery, and maintain operations even when one branch is affected.

“Solutions like Synology’s ActiveProtect are helping organizations reduce manual workloads, standardize backup and recovery processes, save time, and ensure continuous operations,” the company said.

A layered defense strategy that includes strong backup and recovery practices allows businesses to protect critical data and keep systems running, even in the face of ongoing ransomware threats.
