Acknowledging the imperative to bolster cybersecurity within the traditional banking sector, the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) mobilized its members to undergo cybersecurity training facilitated by technology company Cisco.

This initiative, part of Cisco Philippines’ local version of the Cisco Country Digital Acceleration Program, known as Ugnayan 2030, saw professionals from 13 commercial banks undergo comprehensive cybersecurity training developed by Cisco Networking Academy, an IT skills-to-job program.

“With the evolving cyber threat landscape, banking professionals must be equipped with the knowledge and skillsets to prevent cybersecurity breaches and respond swiftly to threats,” said Benjamin Castillo, Managing Director, BAP.

The participants, recognized during a recent ceremony spanning the National Capital Region, hailed from diverse backgrounds within the banking industry.

Empowering the financial services sector

“At Cisco, we recognize the urgency of this demand and remain committed to empowering those in the financial services sector with the knowledge and skills to securely navigate the digital landscape and improve cybersecurity resilience,” said Zaza Soriano-Nicart, managing director, Cisco Philippines.

Castillo stressed the pressing need for legacy banks to strengthen their cybersecurity measures, noting that while digital banks naturally excel in this area, many employees in traditional banking sectors originate from non-technical disciplines. This is one of the reasons for the inception of the Cisco-BAP Cybersecurity Skills Training Program for the Next Generation Banker.

Professionals from member banks pursued one of two pathways tailored to their roles. Those with management responsibilities, irrespective of department, undertook the Beginners Program, covering fundamental cybersecurity concepts. Managers with technical roles in technology or cybersecurity enrolled in the Specialized Program, delving deeper into areas like network security, CyberOps, and cloud security.
