As the holiday season approaches, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is urging consumers to remain vigilant against the growing threat of cyber scams. With the increase in online shopping during this period, cybercriminals often target unsuspecting shoppers through phishing emails, fake websites, and other online scams.
“As the holiday season nears, it is important that consumers stay alert against the rising number of cyber scams,” said Jonathan Paz, information security and data protection officer of BPI Enterprise.
Paz emphasized that staying informed and cautious can help protect personal and financial data.
BPI is reminding customers to take practical steps to avoid falling victim to scams. Some tips include avoiding public Wi-Fi for online transactions, not sharing One-Time PINs (OTPs), and ensuring websites are legitimate before making purchases.
Shared responsibility
According to a survey by Statista, 8 in 10 Filipinos plan to shop during holiday sales, with many shopping both online and in physical stores. This surge in consumer activity provides opportunities for scammers to target those who are less vigilant.
“Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility,” Paz said.
He highlighted BPI’s efforts in promoting cyber hygiene, which includes practices that help consumers stay safe online. BPI has also invested in advanced digital platforms to further strengthen cybersecurity.
With cyber scams expected to rise, BPI encourages the public to stay cautious and follow security tips to enjoy a safe and scam-free holiday shopping experience.
