In 2023, Coursera saw a fivefold surge in Filipino interest in generative AI (GenAI) content compared to the previous year. In its latest study, the online learning platform gathered data from 2.1 million Filipino learners, highlighting key interest and preference trends.
GenAI courses that learners accessed included “Introduction to Generative AI” by Google Cloud, “Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT” from Vanderbilt University, and the rapid success of “Generative AI for Everyone” by DeepLearning.AI. Andrew Ng’s course became Coursera’s fastest-growing globally within just six weeks of its launch.
“Their interest in GenAI, tech, and data skills, not only reflects their thirst for cutting-edge knowledge but also their commitment to staying at the forefront of the digital revolution”, said Raghav Gupta, managing director, APAC, Coursera.

The data showed Filipino learners’ eagerness for high-demand tech and data science skills, crucial for success in today’s digital economy. The most favored course among Filipinos remains “Google’s Foundations: Data, Data, Everywhere,” a popular choice for those aiming to bolster their foundational literacy in a data-centric world.
Mental health
The 2023 data also revealed Filipino learners’ strong interest in personal development, particularly in exploring mental health and well-being. Courses like “Learning How to Learn” by Deep Teaching Solutions and Yale University’s “The Science of Wellbeing” gained traction, emphasizing lifelong learning and personal growth.
“In the year ahead, we are excited to use GenAI to transform education, providing personalized, engaging, and inclusive learning,” Gupta said. “The renewed focus on lifelong learning, tech and human skills, and blended learning on campuses will be the key to employability in the AI-driven world.”
