Cybersecurity challenges in the Philippines have become more pressing as over 26.8% of Filipino users faced online threats in the last quarter of 2024, according to the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN). The Philippines ranked 17th globally for web-related threats during this period, underlining the need for stronger digital safety measures.
“These numbers show the need for Filipinos to take online security seriously,” said Adrian Hia, managing director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky. “It’s not just about using better tools; we also need to focus on training local talent to address gaps in cybersecurity expertise.”
Citing a report from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Kaspersky highlighted the country’s shortage of cybersecurity professionals. A 2022 report revealed that only 200 experts are working in the field locally, a stark contrast to Singapore’s 2,000 professionals. Low government salaries are discouraging skilled workers from joining public service, further complicating the issue.
Web threats in the Philippines often target users through browser vulnerabilities or social engineering tactics, such as tricking people into clicking harmful links. File-less malware, which is harder to detect because it doesn’t leave traces on devices, has also become a significant concern. Aside from online risks, offline threats like malware spread through USB drives affected 19.3% of users during the same period.
Kaspersky recommends a mix of practical steps to improve security. For individuals, this includes using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and avoiding unverified links or websites. Businesses are advised to regularly update software, limit access to sensitive systems, and set up a Security Operations Center (SOC) for real-time threat monitoring.
“By adopting these strategies, we can create safer online spaces and protect against evolving cyber threats,” Hia added.
As digital threats grow more sophisticated, Kaspersky emphasizes the importance of combining education, technology, and collaboration to foster a resilient cybersecurity culture in the Philippines.
