De La Salle University (DLSU) has embarked on several technology-driven research programs to enhance its research capabilities in the areas of engineering as well as artificial intelligence (AI).
DLSU’s Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies (IBEHT) was founded by Prof. Nilo Bugtai founded with the hopes of developing therapeutic robots for stroke rehabilitation. This initiative, funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), aims to provide affordable, high-quality healthcare solutions for both local and international markets.
“At DLSU, we understand that quality is the first imperative in research,” said Prof. Raymond Tan, VP for Research and Innovation at DLSU. “Our aspirations for real-world impact should have a firm foundation in scientific rigor.”
Over the past five years, DLSU has launched several research centers focusing on various priority areas. These include the Andrew L. Tan Data Science Institute (ALTDSI), the Enrique Razon Logistics Institute (ERLI), IBEHT, and the Southeast Asian Research Center and Hub (SEARCH). The Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) at DLSU’s Laguna Campus houses advanced laboratory equipment, such as a nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy lab and a wind tunnel, to support the needs of researchers, students, and partners.
AI and data analytics
DLSU is also leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance data analysis. A study led by Prof. Allan Bernardo and researchers from ALTDSI used machine learning to analyze large datasets from the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa). The analysis highlighted the significant impact of the home environment on student performance, suggesting that effective policy interventions require a comprehensive government approach.
To further augment its AI and data science research, DLSU has invested in a high-performance computing facility as part of ALTDSI. Since revising its mission in 2015 to become a “learner-centered and research university,” DLSU has seen rapid growth in research initiatives. As the university approaches its 50th anniversary in 2025, it aims to extend its influence beyond the Philippines.
With continuous investments in talent and infrastructure, DLSU hopes to solidify its reputation as a research powerhouse, driving innovation and problem-solving for a brighter future in the region and beyond.
