Google Pay is now available in the Philippines for compatible Android and Wear OS devices, allowing EastWest credit cardholders to pay using their phones instead of physical cards.
EastWest is among the first local banks to support Google Pay. Cardholders can add their EastWest Visa or Mastercard credit card to Google Wallet and use it to pay in physical stores, in mobile apps, and on websites that accept contactless payments.
The service aims to reduce common payment steps, such as lining up at checkout counters, pulling out wallets, or manually entering card details online. Payments are completed by unlocking the phone and tapping it on a contactless terminal, or by selecting Google Pay during online checkout.
For everyday shopping, Google Pay can be used in groceries, cafés, and retail stores with contactless terminals. For online purchases, users no longer need to type card numbers or security codes. Google Pay can also be used for public transport payments, including the MRT-3, which supports tap-to-pay at turnstiles.
EastWest said the rollout supports its move toward more mobile-based banking services. The bank noted that more card products, including selected debit cards, may be added as more Filipinos adopt Google Pay.
Why the tap-to-pay setup works
- It is secure. Google Wallet uses tokenization, which means the actual card number is not shared with merchants.
- It is widely accepted. Many payment terminals in stores already support contactless payments.
- It works online. Many apps and websites allow faster checkout using Google Pay.
- It is convenient. Users can pay with just their phone in places that accept contactless cards.
With support for Google Pay, EastWest cardholders have another option for handling daily payments with fewer steps, whether in stores, online, or during their commute.
