Dubai-based airline Emirates has fitted its flagship Airbus A380 with next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi, delivering speeds of up to 2 Gbps and free onboard internet for all passengers.
The first A380 equipped with Starlink returned to Dubai this week after installation and certification in Newquay, UK. The upgrade includes three Starlink antennas per aircraft, boosting onboard bandwidth from less than 1 Mbps in earlier systems to speeds that are up to 1,000 times faster.
Passengers across all cabin classes can stream, browse, work, and play games mid-flight using personal devices, with no added cost and a simple sign-up process. Future updates include live TV streaming, initially on personal devices and later on seatback screens.
The A380, known for features like the Onboard Lounge and First Class Shower Spa, now adds high-speed connectivity to its long list of premium offerings. The system is designed specifically for the aircraft’s double-deck layout and large passenger capacity, with additional wireless access points to maintain stable connections across both decks.
Compared with the airline’s Boeing 777-300ER fleet, the A380 requires more complex integration, including a third antenna to support higher data demand.
Installation will expand across more A380 aircraft throughout 2026, with upgrades set to take place at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai. So far, 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft have already been equipped with Starlink, and more than 650,000 passengers have experienced the service.
The rollout forms part of Emirates’ fleet upgrade program. To date, 93 aircraft have been refurbished, adding Premium Economy seats, upgraded cabins, and improved inflight entertainment systems with over 6,500 channels.
Emirates also continues to invest in customer experience training, including an $8-million “Centre of Hospitality Excellence” to support its 25,000 cabin crew.
