By 2027, Generative AI (GenAI) will be used to add context to 75% of new analytics content, enabling smarter connections between data insights and business actions, according to technology research firm Gartner, Inc.

“We’re moving from an era where analytic tools help business people make decisions, to a future where GenAI-powered analytics becomes perceptive and adaptive,” Georgia O’Callaghan, director and analyst at Gartner, said at the Gartner Data & Analytics Summit in Sydney. “This will enable dynamic and autonomous decisions that have the potential to transform enterprise and consumer software, business processes, and models.”

A Gartner survey of 403 analytics and AI leaders, conducted from October to December 2024, found that more than half of organizations already use AI tools for automated insights and natural language queries in analytics or AI development. However, Gartner noted that current analytics often remain static and do not yet deliver fully dynamic and automated results.

The firm expects that by 2027, today’s augmented analytics tools will evolve into autonomous platforms, capable of fully managing and executing 20% of business processes. These systems will offer continuous, contextual, and collaborative insights, helping businesses respond more quickly to market changes, customer behavior shifts, or supply chain disruptions.

“Perceptive analytics will use AI agents and other GenAI-fueled technologies to continuously monitor evolving conditions and perceive the target environment,” O’Callaghan said. “Guidance and analysis can then be autonomously adjusted in response, creating a more resilient and responsive analytical infrastructure.”

Gartner also warned of risks tied to increased autonomy. One concern is “agent drift,” where AI systems’ decisions begin to move away from intended goals due to changing data or unexpected interactions. To address this, organizations are developing “guardian agents” tasked with enforcing rules and policies.

“Building guardian agents will need to be a key focal point of new governance initiatives for data and analytics leaders, as agentic and perceptive analytics become the standard way of insight delivery across platforms,” said O’Callaghan.
