A recent survey conducted by research and consulting firm Gartner highlights generative artificial intelligence’s (GenAI) dominance in the AI landscape, with 29% of organizations having deployed and actively utilizing it, surpassing other AI solutions.
The Gartner survey explored the prevailing trends in AI deployment across organizations in the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom and was participated in by 644 respondents.
GenAI’s integration into existing applications, as shown by platforms like Microsoft’s Copilot for 365 or Adobe Firefly, emerges as the primary method for addressing GenAI use cases, as reported by 34% of respondents. This approach outweighs alternatives such as customizing GenAI models or utilizing standalone GenAI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini.
“GenAI is acting as a catalyst for the expansion of AI in the enterprise,” said Leinar Ramos, senior director analyst at Gartner. “This creates a window of opportunity for AI leaders, but also a test on whether they will be able to capitalize on this moment and deliver value at scale.”
AI challenges
However, the survey uncovers a significant hurdle to AI adoption: nearly half of the participants cite difficulty in estimating and demonstrating the value of AI projects. This challenge supersedes other barriers like talent shortages and technical complexities, underlining the need for organizations to evaluate the total cost of ownership and broader benefits of AI initiatives.
“GenAI has increased the degree of AI adoption throughout the business and made topics like AI upskilling and AI governance much more important,” said Ramos. “GenAI is forcing organizations to mature their AI capabilities.”
Addressing these foundational capabilities can aid organizations in maturing their AI practices and overcoming the obstacle of bringing AI projects into production. According to Gartner, only 48% of AI projects reach production, with an average timeline of eight months from prototype to deployment, indicating the pressing need for streamlined processes and enhanced capabilities in the AI landscape.
