The Philippine government is urging young Filipinos to consider careers in agriculture, as it works to turn the sector into a modern and tech-driven industry.

During his visit to the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said that new technology is key to helping farming thrive and that the youth are well-positioned to lead this transformation.

“The younger generation is the ones who fully understand high-tech agriculture, intensive and extensive types of agriculture,” Marcos said.

He also pointed out that farming is often seen as a dead-end job, which he wants to change by making the field more appealing and rewarding.

The President admitted that a lack of clear agricultural policy may have contributed to the declining interest in farming, especially among the youth. He said he hopes to introduce reforms to support young farmers and spark greater involvement in the industry.

“They just need to see results. That’s what I think we can do. And for the younger ones, they’ll say, ‘This is interesting,’” Marcos said.

He added that once young Filipinos begin to appreciate farming, their natural perseverance and work ethic will help them tackle the demands of the job.

“Even if there are some difficulties, of course, everyone needs to work hard. Filipinos are hardworking. Even the youth are truly hardworking,” he said.
