The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has replaced traditional countdown traffic lights with a sensor-based signaling system at key intersections in Metro Manila.

MMDA Chair Atty. Don Artes said the agency has installed adaptive traffic lights that rely on sensors to decide when vehicles can move. This system adjusts in real time based on the actual flow of traffic.

“We have completed the removal of traffic signal light timers at 96 intersections in Metro Manila,” Artes said. “This is part of our efforts to improve traffic flow and safety.”

The new system also aims to reduce incidents of speeding. Artes said some drivers tend to rush through intersections when timers show the green light about to end.

Instead of timers, the new lights will now blink green five times before turning yellow for three seconds, then red. The blinking is meant to warn drivers to slow down and prepare to stop.

The MMDA said its Traffic Engineering Center carried out the installation and adjustments as part of the traffic control modernization in the capital.
