Tech giant IBM has introduced the IBM z17, its latest mainframe system designed with artificial intelligence (AI) integrated into every layer of its hardware and software. Scheduled for release on June 18, 2025, the z17 marks a new chapter in IBM’s push to support AI-driven operations in enterprise environments.

Built around the new IBM Telum II processor, the z17 is designed to handle a wider range of workloads than its predecessor. It can process up to 50% more AI inference operations per day compared to the IBM z16. IBM claims the system supports over 250 AI use cases, including loan risk analysis, medical image processing, chatbot services, and crime prevention in retail.

“We’re bringing AI to the core of the enterprise with the software, processing power, and storage to make AI operational quickly,” said Ross Mauri, general manager of IBM Z and LinuxONE. “Organizations can put their vast, untapped stores of enterprise data to work with AI in a secured, cost-effective way.”

The z17 is the result of five years of development, during which IBM filed more than 300 patent applications. Over 100 enterprise clients contributed feedback during the design process. The mainframe now includes multi-model AI capabilities and stronger security features. It is also equipped with tools that use AI to improve system management and ease of use.

Supports hybrid cloud

IBM said the z17 works well in hybrid cloud environments, supporting open standards and developer tools. It continues the platform’s legacy of strong security and high availability, with added intelligence to address rising cybersecurity threats.

The system also works with IBM Storage DS8000, a high-performance storage solution. The latest version of DS8000 is designed to support z17 workloads by delivering fast, consistent access to data and a modular architecture that helps businesses scale with new technology.

IBM is offering support services for the z17 through its Technology Lifecycle Services. These include AI-based tools for handling system issues, speeding up problem resolution, and ensuring stability for critical operations.

IBM said the z17 aims to help businesses adopt AI while keeping their systems secure and running smoothly.
