Recent data from cybersecurity solutions company Kaspersky revealed a surge in local threats targeting organizations across Southeast Asia (SEA) in 2023. According to its latest statistics, a staggering 42.7 million local infections were blocked by Kaspersky’s business solutions throughout the year.
Local infections, which include threats penetrating target computers through various means such as infected files or removable media, serve as a critical indicator of the region’s cyberthreat landscape. These figures, derived from Kaspersky’s security solutions scans, underscore the persistent challenges faced by businesses in safeguarding their digital assets.
“Southeast Asia shows a solid potential to become a major manufacturing hub globally,” said Adrian Hia, managing director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky. “The region is also consistent in charting steady digital economic growth through the years. To be able to continue these feats, organizations, whether operating on IT or OT systems, should build their cyber defenses against sophisticated attacks that use the same old techniques and tactics.”

While global threats experienced an upward trajectory over the past year, Southeast Asian countries, with the exception of Singapore, witnessed a marginal decrease in the number of local threats detected and thwarted on corporate devices using Kaspersky business solutions.
Local attacks
In contrast, Singapore recorded a significant 67% year-on-year increase, with local incidents surging from 300,000 in 2022 to 500,000 in 2023. On the other hand, businesses in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand grappled with the highest number of local threats during the same period.
To combat local attacks effectively, Hia emphasized the importance of comprehensive security solutions equipped with features such as firewalls, anti-rootkit functionality, and removable device control. Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business offers organizations the capability to scan removable drives for malware, providing an essential layer of protection against potential threats.
Kaspersky’s integrated software solution, the Kaspersky Unified Monitoring and Analysis Platform (KUMA), offers a centralized console for monitoring and analyzing information security incidents. With its multifaceted functionalities, KUMA serves as both a log management system and a full-fledged SIEM system, enabling organizations to bolster their cybersecurity posture effectively.
