MediaTek introduces new Dimensity chips for smartphones

MediaTek-Dimensity-9500s

MediaTek has introduced two new mobile processors, the Dimensity 9500s and Dimensity 8500, designed to power upcoming flagship and premium smartphones. The chipmaker said the new processors focus on improving everyday performance, power efficiency, gaming, camera features, and wireless connectivity.

“These chipsets are intended to provide more flagship and premium smartphone experiences while upholding our vision of bringing strong performance and power efficiency to more people,” said JC Hsu, corporate senior vice president at MediaTek and general manager of the Wireless Communications Business Unit.

The Dimensity 9500s is built using a 3-nanometer manufacturing process and uses an all big core CPU design. It has eight cores, including one Cortex-X925 core running at up to 3.73GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores, and four Cortex-A720 cores. MediaTek said this setup allows phones to handle demanding tasks while using less power.

For graphics, the Dimensity 9500s uses the Immortalis-G925 GPU. It supports advanced gaming features such as ray tracing, which improves lighting and reflections in supported games. MediaTek added that its gaming and frame management technologies help reduce power use, which can help extend battery life during long gaming sessions.

The chip also includes a neural processing unit designed for on-device artificial intelligence (AI) tasks. These include editing photos, processing live images, and summarizing calls or meetings. MediaTek said these features are meant to support phone makers as they add more AI tools to their devices.

On the camera side, the Dimensity 9500s uses the MediaTek Imagiq image processor. It supports real-time motion tracking and 8K video recording with Dolby Vision HDR. The chip also improves photo capture speed and reduces noise in images.

Connectivity features include a 5G Release 17 modem with download speeds of up to 7Gbps, power-saving 5G technology, better performance in weak signal areas, extended indoor Wi-Fi range, and direct Bluetooth connections of up to five kilometers between devices.

The Dimensity 8500 targets premium smartphones and uses a 4-nanometer process. It features eight Cortex-A725 cores running at up to 3.4GHz. MediaTek said this design balances performance and battery efficiency for daily use, gaming, and multitasking.

The chip includes a Mali-G720 GPU, which delivers higher performance than the previous generation while using less power. It also supports ray tracing for supported mobile games.

For AI tasks, the Dimensity 8500 comes with MediaTek’s eighth-generation NPU, which supports large language models and image generation. It also includes AI tools to improve zoom photography and optimize image quality automatically.
