TeamViewer, a digital workplace solutions provider, is working with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team to improve operations through its Tensor platform, which powers the team’s driver-in-loop simulator and remote access systems.
In a virtual briefing, Steven Riley, head of IT operations and service management at Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, emphasized the simulator’s role in race preparation.
“The simulator that we have here in Brackley is absolutely critical as it allows us to test a lot of setup options before we get to the circuit to make sure that the car arrives in as optimal a setup as possible,” Riley said.
The simulator replicates the behavior of a real car in a controlled digital environment, enabling drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to test different setups ahead of each race. This year, the tool has been especially useful for Antonelli as he learns new tracks, having recently joined the team.
TeamViewer also provides remote desktop control for engineers to access systems and testing equipment from anywhere, ensuring smooth operations across multiple global locations. The simulator supports collaboration among engineers, testing car components under stress, and reviewing designs to prepare the car’s configuration for both safety and performance.
“We only have a few people to drive the cars. So, making sure that the drivers are as involved in all of that decision-making as possible is something that we really try and leverage,” he said.
Beyond testing and driver familiarization, TeamViewer helps engineers access in-car displays, analyze competitors, monitor weather, and plan race strategies during limited garage time. It also enables technology commissioning and decommissioning as the team moves between race venues.
Riley said TeamViewer is “a critical technological enabler,” supporting Mercedes’ efforts to balance driver safety, car performance, and operational efficiency throughout the Formula 1 season.
