Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) reported a lower share of unpaid loans and growth in assets as The Asian Banker (TAB) named it the Philippines’ Strongest Bank for the sixth consecutive year.
Metrobank posted net income of ₱24.9 billion in the first half of 2026. Its non-performing loans (NPL) ratio, which measures the share of loans borrowers are not repaying as agreed, stood at 1.8%, below the reported industry average of 3.4%.
“Our strength comes from the trust our customers place in us and the dedication of our Metrobankers, who remain committed to delivering financial solutions that help our clients succeed in different market conditions,” said Fabian Dee, president of Metrobank. “This recognition reflects how we continue to grow stronger together with our clients, communities, and partners through every challenge and opportunity.”
“As we look ahead, we will continue to strengthen our capabilities, manage risks prudently, and create long-term value for all our stakeholders,” Dee said.
Metrobank’s total consolidated assets grew by 12.7% to ₱3.9 trillion, while total equity stood at ₱409.7 billion. Its NPL cover reached 133.3%, meaning funds set aside for possible loan losses exceeded the value of its non-performing loans.
The bank reported a Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 14.9% and a Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio of 14.2%. These measures track the bank’s capital cushion against risks. Metrobank said both remained above regulatory requirements.
The recognition forms part of The Asian Banker’s annual ranking of the world’s 1,000 largest and strongest banks. The assessment covers financial performance, balance sheet strength, asset quality, liquidity, and risk management. An independent panel of central bankers, global financial experts, and research professionals reviews institutional performance.
Established in Singapore in 1997, The Asian Banker is a leading provider of research and intelligence for the financial services industry. Through its global awards program, it recognizes excellence in banking, digital transformation, and leadership across Asia-Pacific and other markets.
Metrobank also received the Cesar E.A. Virata Award, the highest recognition at the 2026 PDS Annual Awards, and secured top rankings in the Local Currency Bonds and G3 Bonds categories at the Asset Benchmark Research Awards 2026.
