PLDT’s wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. said it recorded the lowest mobile latency in the Philippines for the first half of 2025, based on an analysis by network intelligence firm Ookla. The result covers all network technologies and includes data from Smart’s value brand TNT.

Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence data showed that Smart posted a median latency of 45.89 milliseconds for the first and second quarters of 2025. The findings are based on millions of tests from users across the country.

“Connectivity should be responsive,” said Debbie Hu, FVP and head of Wireless Networks at Smart. “Our conversations, entertainment, work, and play should feel immediate, and this recognition from Ookla confirms that Smart is leading the way in giving Filipinos that world-class experience.”

Latency refers to the time it takes for data to travel from a user’s device to the internet and back. It affects how fast apps respond, especially for mobile gaming, video calls, livestreaming, and digital payments.

“This accolade is a testament to their industry leadership performance, as proven by Ookla’s methodology,” said Stephen Bye, president and CEO of Ookla, a division of Ziff Davis.

Latency has become an important factor as more digital activities require faster network response. In mobile gaming and esports, a few milliseconds can affect gameplay. For livestreaming and video calls, lower latency helps reduce delays and improves audio and video quality.

Remote workers and students benefit from smoother online meetings and faster loading of shared files. People who shop, bank, or pay through mobile apps also rely on quick network response for secure and efficient transactions.

“These are everyday activities that have become essential in the digital world, and as we continuously improve our network, our goal is always to stay ahead of customers’ evolving needs,” Hu said.
